Shekar Kapur, 1998 (121 mins, Cert. 15)
Political intrigue, loyalty, love, treachery and it's not about todayâs
monarchy. A sumptuous, dramatic telling of the turbulent years before
and after Elizabethâs accession.
(Playhouse publicity)
An absorbing and fascinating film that shows a more down-to-earth view
of the early years of the first Elizabethan age. Many scenes are
breathtaking set pieces of (sometimes sordid) splendour. In contrast to
these, some other events are sketched in, almost as though witnessed by
report rather than experience. The final scenes, where Elizabeth
wilfully transforms herself into a rival to the Virgin Mary provide a
provocative ending to a rewarding couple of hours. Highly recommended.
