Sharon Maguire, 2000 (96 mins, Cert.
15)
Thirty-something Bridget (Renée
Zellweger) is (she thinks) overweight, undersexed and consuming inordinate
quantities of Chardonnay and ciggies with her also very single friends.
Heavingly funny and tear-jerkingly poignant, this is one of those definitely-not-to-be-missed
movies.

A lot less tacky and a lot more fun
than I was expecting. A very pacey film, with a tabloid-like punchiness,
that covers a lot of ground in an hour and a half. The Pride & Prejudice
connotations are played up for all they're worth and it's fun to see Hugh
Grant playing a shit to Colin Firth's Mister Right. Lots and lots of belly
laughs and a chocolate box happy ending; what more could you ask from a
lightweight, enjoyable and refreshing picture?
